The hospital's upgraded emergency department has 17 emergency treatments bays - up from five - two resuscitation bays, two paediatric treatment bays and 13 general patient treatment bays.
A new negative pressure treatment bay and other clinical rooms will also support emergencies.
Its opening comes as design work continues on the new Mount Barker Hospital, which is set to be located at the site of the current Mount Barker District Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital on Wellington Rd.
When complete, which is expected to be by the end of 2027, the new hospital will triple inpatient capacity – going from 34 to 102 beds – to help meet the needs of the expanding local population.

Meanwhile, cranes and scaffolding are in place, to allow work to begin on the $47 million expansion at Lyell McEwin Hospital in Adelaide’s north. A sealed canopy will be placed over the site so that construction can continue throughout winter.
A further 48 beds will be added to the Elizabeth Vale hospital as part of the expansion, being delivered by construction company Built.
The single rooms with ensuites will be constructed as two 24-bed inpatient wards in part of the hospital that was originally constructed as a ‘cold shell’ in 2013 to accommodate future expansion.
The upgrade will also deliver other support spaces, such as sterile and cleaning storage areas, and staff offices.
It is being done in stages to minimise disruption and allow the hospital to continue to safely operate.
The expansion is due to be completed in 2024.
Northern Adelaide Local Health Network CEO Maree Geraghty said: “This expansion is welcome news for our staff and the people who we care for, and it will ensure our services grow to meet the health needs of our community.”

Residents of Adelaide’s southern suburbs will also benefit from extra healthcare support, with a $74 million upgrade of Noarlunga Hospital announced in January.
The project will include 48 new beds, lifting capacity to 140, with 24 mental health beds and 24 new inpatient medical beds.
A new $36 million purpose-built Mental Health Rehabilitation Service will also deliver support for those with high and complex needs.
