Last chance to have a say on e-scooters on roads, paths

Consultation with private e-scooter users and local communities is now underway.

Consultation on the ongoing use of electric scooters (e‑scooters), electric skateboards (e‑skateboards) and other personal mobility devices (PMDs) on South Australian roads closes on Sunday 21 May.

The Department of Infrastructure and Transport is seeking the feedback to ensure that any future framework for the use of PMDs on public roads and paths is safe for all road users.

Currently, e-scooters are only permitted for use on public roads and paths in South Australia under trial conditions.

Trials currently operate within Adelaide’s CBD and North Adelaide, the City of Norwood, Payneham and St Peters, the City of Charles Sturt and the City of Unley under partnership agreements between local councils and commercial e-scooter fleet operators.

Privately owned e-scooters, e-skateboards and other PMDs are not currently allowed on public roads and paths.

Consultation is now open with private e-scooter users and local communities on potentially moving beyond the trial phase to an ongoing model that allows riders to use their personal devices.

Feedback is being sought on whether PMDs should be allowed, and if allowed:

  • what kinds of devices should be permitted
  • where should they be used
  • how big should they be
  • how fast should they be allowed to travel
  • what rules should apply to riders
  • whether they should be registered and/or insured.

Community members are invited to provide their feedback until consultation closes on Sunday 21 May.
