Buildings and monuments across South Australia were illuminated in regal purple to celebrate the Coronation of The King and The Queen Consort.

Twenty structures were being illuminated on Saturday May 6 and Sunday May 7, including St Peter's Cathedral, Adelaide Oval, Lobethal Woollen Mill Company, Unley Town Hall, the Port Adelaide Lighthouse and Adelaide Railway Station.

Government House similarly lit up from sunset to 10pm each evening until Tuesday May 9.

The historic event, the first coronation to be held in Britain in 70 years, took place at Westminster Abbey, London, on Saturday 6 May, starting at 11am GMT (7.30pm ACST). A celebratory concert was held at Windsor Castle on Sunday 7 May.

Government House is hosting a series of events during May for South Australians to celebrate the occasion a little closer to home including:

  • On Friday 5 May, the grounds of Government House opened for a special Lunch on the Lawns, with performances by the Royal South Australian Regiment Band, and the State Opera South Australia.
  • A congratulatory book made available at Government House from May 5-21 for South Australians to share a message of congratulations to Their Majesties. There will also be an online book available, with all messages to be collated and sent to Buckingham Palace.
  • Government House will open its doors and gardens for a special Open Day on Sunday 21 May to celebrate the Coronation and His Majesty's connections with South Australia. A selection of memorabilia will be on display, including from The King's six visits to South Australia.

A stand of commemorative wattle trees will also be planted in the grounds of Government House.
