The new barracks, to be built in the northern suburbs, will feature with 32 stables and an undercover arena and be able to support the important work of SA police for decades to come.
The Dog Operation Unit will also relocate to the Gepps Cross site, with a separate area for kennels and special training facilities.
The move, expected to be complete by mid-2024, will cost $90 million and will include work to upgrade access roads off Grand Junction Road and Briens Road.
Gepps Cross has been chosen as the more suitable location over other previously identified land adjacent Adelaide Airport, after taking into consideration animal welfare principles.
Details are also still being finalised for a city staging post for the Mounted Operations Unit, allowing SAPOL to maintain a presence in the CBD for its city-based operations.
The Mounted Operations Unit is being moved from its current location at the Thebarton Police Barracks to make way for early works on the $3.2 billion new Women’s and Children’s Hospital.
