The $20.9 million expansion of Roma Mitchell Secondary College will allow for an additional 180 places, increasing the school's total capacity to 2114 students.

A new gymnasium designed to international competition standards will also be built, which will include a sports storage area, canteen and cafeteria, and new changerooms.

The college, which was purpose-built in 2011, has four campuses co-located on its Gepps Cross site - a girls’ campus, middle campus, senior campus and special campus.

Roma Mitchell Secondary College Principal Toni Carellas said the improved facilities would better meet the needs of future students.

“The new gymnasium will go a long way in ensuring that our students have access to a multipurpose state-of-the-art facility that can be used for a range of activities,” Ms Carellas said.

“It also means that with the increase in student numbers, a lot more students have access to indoor facilities, especially in times of extreme weather conditions.”

Construction will also begin later this year on a $5 million upgrade of Nailsworth Primary School to help meet growing enrolments.
