Ten walks to get you outdoors and moving


Explore the walking trails within our state's National Parks, including the Steub Trail at Cleland National Park (pictured).

It's no secret a good, brisk walk can have a positive impact on our physical, mental and social wellbeing.

But with winter around the corner, the temptation can be to rug up and stay inside.

To help encourage you to get outdoors and moving, we have uncovered 10 great walks that are worth dusting off the rain jacket and beanie for, and popping on the sneakers.

Steub Trail, Cleland National Park - 3.8km

This trail is designed for accessibility, and is open to bikes, prams and walkers and offers an easier route between Waterfall Gully and Mount Lofty Summit in the Adelaide Hills.

Newman’s Nursery Ruins Walk, Anstey Hill Recreation Park - 3km

Add a touch of history on this walk, which starts at Gate 6 on Perseverance Road, Vista and runs along Water Gully to the ruins of Newman’s Nursery. The Nursery was established in 1854 and was once the largest nursery in the Southern Hemisphere.

Deep Creek Circuit, Deep Creek Conservation Park - 12km

This walk isn’t for the faint-hearted but has some of the best ocean and bush views in the Deep Creek Conservation Park. It takes you to Deep Creek Waterfall and down into the stunning Deep Creek Cove.

Parnka Ngoppun Trail, Coorong National Park - 5km

The name says it all, with Parnka meaning ‘sandy beach’ and Ngoppun meaning ‘walk’ in the local Ngarrindjeri language. This walk is great for bird watchers and those who enjoy a walk among nature.

Three Falls Grand Hike, Morialta Conservation Park - 7.3km

A steep climb with an impressive view at the top, this popular walk will get your heart racing, as you loop round all three of the waterfalls in Morialta Conservation Park.

Mount Ohlssen Bagg, Flinders Ranges - 7km

Any hike through the Flinders Ranges is going to be spectacular, but this hike is often touted as the best - with stunning red rock and desert scenery to rewarding views at the top of the trail.

Arkaba Walk, Flinders Ranges - 45km

Traversing Wilpena Pound, the Arkaba Walk is an opportunity to experience the sights and sounds of the Outback as you journey through 600 million years of geological history.

Thorndon Park loop - 1.5km

A walk that the whole family can enjoy, a stroll around the Thorndon Park lake at Paradise will take you past attractions including the water towers, natural wetlands and a giant chess boards. There are numerous walking trails around the lake to explore.

Onkaparinga River Hike, Onkaparinga River National Park - 4.2km

This walk starts off relatively easy, along paths through rolling hills. It then gets a little more technical as you start the descent into the Onkaparinga Gorge. You can then hike along the banks of the Onkaparinga River until you start the walk back up.

Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens, Adelaide Hills

No walking list is complete without Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens with its vibrant colours of red, yellow and green throughout the cooler months. There are lots of great walks, from easy to hard, around the 97 hectares of sprawling gullies.
