Nation's biggest children's festival kicks off in SA


Taking over the Adelaide Festival Centre and surrounds until Saturday 27 May, this year’s DreamBIG festival focuses on the theme, Our World.

It will feature more than 50 shows, activities and exhibitions for babies through to teenagers.

The largest event of its kind in Australia, DreamBIG was originally called Come Out Children's Festival and is held every two years.

DreamBIG's Co-Creative Producer Susannah Sweeney said more than 2.5 million children had participated in the event since it began in 1974.

“This festival remains an intrinsic part of growing up in South Australia," she said.

"We hope that participating in DreamBIG will encourage young people to become creative, compassionate and thoughtful citizens by inspiring them to look at and learn from our world.”

BIG Family Weekend

Don’t miss a stack of free events for kids of all ages, with performances, events, exhibitions, workshops, markets and food trucks at the biggest BIG Family Weekend. Adelaide Festival Centre, May 20-21.

Kidtrepreneur Markets

Discover your new favourite candlemaker, scrunchie sewer or biscuit baker as Adelaide’s youngest entrepreneurs sell their own creations. Festival Theatre’s Dress Circle Foyer, Adelaide, May 20-21.

Massive Maker Space

Let your imagination run wild and get creative by turning a huge pile of junk loose parts into a new creation. Festival Plaza, Adelaide, May 20-21.

Possum Magic

This theatre production is a magical stage adaptation of the much-loved Australian book by Mem Fox and Julie Vivas, using stage magic, puppetry and animation. Dunstan Playhouse, Adelaide, May 27.

Tutti’s Big Sing-a-long

Join the Tutti Choir for a spectacular Big Sing-a-long to all your favourite tunes. Festival Theatre, Adelaide, May 21.

The Thing That Matters

One for babies and young children, The Thing That Matters is a dance theatre presented with original live music for the youngest of audiences. Church of the Trinity Clarence Gardens, May 23-27.
