Chance to have your say on disability issues

If you're a South Australian living with a disability, or you live with or care for a person living with a disability, now is the chance to have your say on the Disability Royal Commission (DRC).

The Department of Human Services is seeking feedback to inform its response to the DRC, which was established in 2019 in response to community concern about violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation of people with disability.

The Royal Commission handed down its final report in September 2023, which made 222 recommendations on how to improve laws, policies, structures and practices to ensure a more inclusive and just society. While most of the recommendations were directed to the Australian Government, some were directed at state and territory governments.

To help facilitate this, JFA Purple Orange is running a series of focus groups on six key themes: employment, education, health, housing, safeguarding and justice.

Focus groups are being held on each topic on the following days:

  • Education, December 13
  • Health, January 17
  • Housing, January 24
  • Safeguarding, January 31
  • Justice, February 7

The sessions will be held from 12.30pm to 2.30pm, with people welcome to attend as many online forums as they like to share their views on the DRC. An employment forum was held on December 6.

Registrations for the education and housing webinars are now open, with registrations for the remaining topics to open on January 10, 2024.
