A new film that shines a global spotlight on an iconic South Australian location is now in cinemas across the nation.
Kangaroo Island, starring Rebecca Breeds, Erik Thomson, Adelaide Clemens and Joel Jackson, was written by Sally Gifford and is the directorial debut for Timothy David, both of whom live in South Australia.
The film follows Lou Wells (Breeds) who has hit rock bottom after a promising start to her Hollywood career.
Now broke and aimless, she reluctantly accepts a plane ticket from her estranged father, Rory (Thomson) to return home to South Australia’s ruggedly beautiful Kangaroo Island.
As years of unresolved tension start to resurface, the reunion turns even more complicated 
when Lou and her sister Freya (Clemens) learn about Rory’s secret.
Kangaroo Island showcases not only a powerful human story but also the natural splendour of one of the world’s most unique destinations.
"We wanted to create a bold and philosophical film that explores our reality that life is as beautiful as it is traumatic," director Timothy David said.
"And how people deal with that determines the quality of their life and relationships.
"The film has a lot of depth, in contrast to the majority of cinema today where too many mistake edgy subject matter for interesting story."
Early responses have been exceptional, with an anonymous audience survey rating the film 9.2 out of 10.
Oscar-nominated Adelaide-based director Scott Hicks also sang the praises of Kangaroo Island.
"Exceptional performance, cinematography, design, editing – all of which points to great producing and directing," Hicks said.
Kangaroo Island is partially funded by the Adelaide Film Festival Investment Fund and the South Australian Film Corporation.
