Siren siblings: Meet the brother-sister paramedics

There’s no sibling rivalry in the Wunsch family.

In fact, quite the opposite is true, with the brother and sister duo supporting each other through their studies at Flinders University.

Now Mark, 26, and Caroline, 24, have graduated together as fully-qualified paramedics with SA Ambulance Service and are ready to serve the South Australian community.

Despite being a few years apart in age, their shared commitment to the field of paramedicine has brought them closer, both academically and professionally.

Caroline describes her decision to pursue a career in paramedicine as "the best decision I ever made”.

"It’s been such a great help having Mark to bounce off of throughout our studies and internship.

"We’ve been able to support each other every step of the way."

The siblings are now set to make their mark in country South Australia, with Caroline set to be stationed at the Whyalla Ambulance Station, while Mark will head to Ceduna Ambulance Station.

While both stations are located on the Eyre Peninsula, they are four-and-a-half hours apart, but despite the distance they are eager to embrace the challenge of providing emergency health care to regional communities.

"We’re both looking forward to the next step in our careers and are excited to contribute to our communities in rural South Australia," Mark said.

"Given the region, it’s quite possible that Caroline and I will have the opportunity to work together at incidents on the Eyre."

SA Ambulance Service Chief Executive Officer Rob Elliott said that siblings graduating together was a "rare and wonderful moment for SAAS".

"Their teamwork and dedication exemplify the values we hold dear in our service, and I have no doubt that they will make a lasting impact on the communities they will serve," Mr Elliott said.

"Our internship program is highly regarded for delivering exceptional training to our paramedic interns.

"I would like to congratulate all our interns progressing to their paramedic roles on their remarkable achievements and wish them all the best as they embark on their next chapter with SAAS."
