Ten great autumn walks in SA


Take a hike through Alligator Gorge in Mount Remarkable National Park.

Need inspiration to keep moving now that warm weather is all but over? We have uncovered 10 great walks that are worth putting on the sneakers or hiking boots for and heading outdoors.

Mount Lofty Botanic Garden l 1km return (Lakeside Trail)

Nestled in the Adelaide Hills, there is no better spot to see autumn leaves in all their glory than at this idyllic 97ha garden. It’s the perfect spot for a leisurely stroll or for those wanting more of a challenge, there is 850m-long Nature Trail that is quite steep in places. Enjoy uncovering the sculptures and artworks dotted about the garden or take in the scenic views from the viewing platform. Entry is free to the garden, which is open weekdays from 8.30am-4pm and weekends and public holidays in April and May until 5pm.

Morialta Conservation Park l 1.7km return to First Falls

This park in Woodforde is a bushwalker’s paradise with many different walking trail options, from easy walks to more challenging hikes. One of Morialta's most popular trails is to First Falls, which has a 30m waterfall at the end of the path which flows on all by the driest months of the year. This is great for families, who might spot some wildlife along the way.

Devil’s Nose Hike l 4.4km return

Head to the Para Wirra Recreation Park in Adelaide’s north and enjoy views of the surrounding countryside on this ridge-top walk. An excellent walk for exploring the quaint bushland, where you can often see kangaroos and other native wildlife.

Riesling Trail l 35km

Watch the leaves fall from the vines on this renowned trail in the Clare Valley wine region, perfect for cycling and walking through the historic villages of Sevenhill and Penwortham. The 35km-long trail, which runs from Auburn to Clare and into Barinia, passes many cellar doors and other visitor attractions, making it perfect to explore over several days.

Alligator Gorge Ring Route Hike l 8.9km return

Set within the scenic Mount Remarkable National Park in the Southern Flinders Ranges, Alligator Gorge is an impressive walk through ancient rocks and narrowly spaced cliffs. Keep an eye out for birds, including emus and kookaburras, wildflowers and kangaroos. There is a shorter Gorge Circuit Hike (3.3km return) that takes visitors through the gorge and along the upper hillside.

Hahndorf Heritage Walk | 1km

Head to the Adelaide Hills and take a self-guided walk through Hahndorf’s 19th century streetscape, strolling under the avenue of trees planted in 1885 while learning about the town's history and development.

Blinman Pools Walk l 12km return

Autumn is a popular time to visit the Flinders Ranges, with cooler temperatures and clear skies making it a great time to explore the region. One of the best short walks is the Blinman Pools Walk, which starts at Angorichina Village and follows the Parachilna and Blinman creeks offering spectacular views of rugged country and sheer cliffs rising from the creek bed. The walk leads to two spring-fed pools with waterfalls, which has been a popular picnic spot since the 1800s.

Mount Barker Summit Walking Trail l 500m return

If you’re heading to the Adelaide Hills, take an easy 250m walk to the Mount Barker Summit. Before reaching the top, stop at a lookout area with picnic tables and enjoy views over the region. The Mount Barker Summit Reserve is one of the district's most important conservation areas and a treasured place for the Peramangk and Njarrindjerri people.

Wild South Coast Way l 74km 

The Wild South Coast Way on the Heysen Trail is for those who long for a true adventure in nature. This 74km walking trail linking Cape Jervis and Victor Harbor on the Fleurieu Peninsula showcases the rugged coastline, native wildlife and the lush natural surroundings. Choose your own adventure and either enjoy a short walk along part of the trail, or challenge yourself to the full five-day, four-night journey, staying at campgrounds along the way.

Bool Lagoon Game Reserve l 1.5km return

If you’re headed to the Limestone Coast, take a must-stop visit to the Bool Lagoon Game Reserve near Naracoorte. It is one of the largest and most diverse freshwater lagoon systems in southern Australia and a magnet for birdwatchers worldwide. Take an easy stroll along the Tea Tree Boardwalk or a slightly longer hike on the Gunawar Walk.
