Country Arts SA is now accepting submissions for the 2027 Breaking Ground Art Award, open to regional visual artists of all disciplines and at any stage of their career.
Offered every two years, the Breaking Ground Award supports its recipient to explore new areas of their art form by working with a mentor of their choosing, pushing their practice into new and uncharted territory over a 12-month period.
As well as the $5000 bespoke mentorship, the award includes $10,000 for the artist to produce a significant body of work for exhibition.
Country Arts SA will also provide curatorial support, covering installation, artwork freight and venue hire costs, and produce a catalogue, photography and marketing materials for the exhibition, to be held at Murray Bridge Regional Gallery during the 2027 SALA Festival.
For many previous recipients, the Breaking Ground Award has been a launchpad for their artistic careers, giving them the support and time needed to establish themselves.
The 2025 Breaking Ground recipient was Susie Althorp from Wallaroo Mines, whose exhibition skopos reflected on the unseen parts of the ocean through ceramics, sculpture and installation.
"The generous amount of time for the project allowed me to explore new and challenging techniques, gaining knowledge and much more to explore in the future," Susie said.
"The mentorship component was immensely beneficial in guiding my journey and adding strength and cohesiveness to the final body of work.
"This opportunity has given me the confidence, motivation and resources to continue my arts practice from a regional country location into the future."
