What’s on in Adelaide these October school holidays


The term three school holidays run from Saturday 28 September to Sunday 13 October. Grab your diary and start planning and locking in some fun for the kids.

Wittunga Botanic Garden

As the weather warms up, it’s the perfect time for a stroll through the beautiful Wittunga Botanic Garden in Blackwood. Children can be inspired by observing the patterns and colours of local feathered friends through an imaginative bird drawing workshop.

Adelaide Botanic Gardens

If you’re in the city, the Botanic Gardens is always worth a visit. Especially in spring as all the beautiful flowers begin to bloom. Children can create a floral keepsake to take home, with flower crown workshops, and the whole family can enjoy the highly anticipated Chihuly exhibition which is free during the day.

Carrick Hill

Set on a 100-acre estate in the Adelaide foothills, take a trip to the stunning grounds, pack your lunch or dine in at the café and bask in the beauty of the historic mansion. Get lost in the garden, explore the estate and wander through the free storybook trail. During the school holidays Carrick Hill is running a nature drawing workshop.

Nature Festival of SA

Returning for its 5th year, over 400 nature-inspired events are blooming across South Australia these Spring School Holidays. There is something for the whole family - art, adventure, music, food, wellbeing, and Aboriginal culture, and plenty of free and family-friendly events. The festival runs from 28 September – 13 October.

Art Gallery of South Australia

When was the last time you visited the Art Gallery? Drop by The Studio and experience Melt and Move by South Australian artist Emmaline Zanelli who has designed a space for participants to engage in sensory play to experiment with biomorphism - a key technique used in Surrealism. Children can also play among the foliage in Pleasance and celebrate the wonder of nature through music, tours and workshops.

South Australian Museum

Head to the Museum these school holidays for hands-on workshops and lots of family fun. Kids can take part in a Nature Photography workshop, get brainy with the University of Adelaide School of Psychology, for visitors with sensory needs the Museum has a sensory friendly evening planned and visitors can create their own chatterbox inspired by the Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year exhibition.

It's also your last chance to experience The Shadow Initiation which is soon leaving the Museum for good. Perfect excuse to beat your final score!

State Library of SA

While a trip to the magical Mortlock is always a good idea, the library team has kindly created a bunch of fun activities that you can do from home.

Cleland Wildlife Park

Spring is a wonderful time to visit the park, with many new babies being born and lots to do and explore. Engage your nature-loving and animal curious children with a range of activities for little ones as young as 2, and plenty for the older kids too. Nilpena Ediacara National Park

For those heading north these school holidays, from Saturday 28 September – Sunday 12 October kids go FREE at Nilpena Ediacara National Park! A fun outing for the whole family, and a chance to step back in time to explore the ancient world of Ediacara.

City of Salisbury

Join in a range of fun activities for all ages from an end of term disco, an energetic and fun rocket league tournament, story walks through Kaurna wetlands, nature journaling and more!

City of Campbelltown

For all the Lego and Duplo lovers, this one is for you! Join the team at Campbeltown library on Saturday 12 October for free play with Lego and Duplo with plenty of new base boards too. The library has lots of other activities for all ages. Explore what’s on and book here.

Muddy Hands Festival

Get ready for muddy fun on Friday 4 October. Spend your school holidays by rolling around in the mud, crafting potions and seed bombs, building a cubby, become the next generation’s pollinator and unleash your imaginative play, while enjoying all that the great outdoors has to offer.

Other children’s entertainment and educational stalls will be on site as well as multiple food vendors to satisfy all your snack, coffee and lunch needs.

The City of Tea Tree Gully is hosting the event in partnership with Nature Play SA.
