$1.5m worth of tobacco up in smoke after regional raids

Officers raiding a regional store during a statewide crackdown on illegal tobacco.

Raids in regional South Australia have netted a $1.5 million in illicit tobacco products, with statewide seizures during a recent crackdown surpassing $5 million.

Licensed and unlicensed businesses in the Mid North and Yorke Peninsula were the focus of the raids, with 20 inspections taking place in recent weeks.

The inspections resulted in the seizure of nearly 470,000 cigarettes (including cartons, packets and cigarette tubes filled with illicit tobacco), nearly 150kg of pouch tobacco and a small number of vapes and shisha products.

The illicit tobacco and vapes, all of which were seized from unlicensed stores, was valued at approximately $450,000.

And raids on trucks at Tailem Bend, Monteith and Port Augusta over the past week have turned up more than $1 million in illegal tobacco.

The truck located in Port Augusta also contained tobacconist signage, shop fittings and price lists for displays, with Operation Eclipse detectives believing the contents were to establish a "pop-up" shop.

Since July 1, more than $5 million in illicit tobacco and vapes have now been seized by authorities.

Last week the State Government passed its nation-leading penalties in relation to the sale of illicit tobacco and vapes with penalties of up to $1.5 million.
