New IVF rebates to make fertility treatments more accessible

Eligible women and families will be able to access a $250 rebate for pre‑IVF fertility testing and a $2,000 rebate for IVF treatment, available for up to two treatment cycles, under a new scheme which came into effect on 1 July.

With typical out‑of‑pocket costs exceeding $4,000 per cycle, the rebate has the potential to cover nearly half the cost for some patients.

The State Government has allocated $18.5 million over four years to deliver the program, which aims to reduce financial barriers for people pursuing fertility treatment.

Infertility affects around one in six Australian couples, and IVF costs are often a major obstacle for those trying to conceive.

The rebate will support a range of critical IVF‑related tests and procedures, including blood tests, imaging, egg retrieval and embryo implantation.

South Australia’s scheme is broader than the rebate offered in New South Wales, with a higher income threshold and eligibility for more than one cycle.

To qualify, applicants must be South Australian residents, have incurred out‑of‑pocket costs for eligible fertility tests or IVF treatment from a registered Assisted Reproductive Treatment provider, and have accessed treatment from 1 July 2026.

They must also receive the Family Tax Benefit, hold a Health Care Card, or have a household income of $180,000 or less.

Information about registered providers and their conditions of registration is available through the Assisted Reproductive Treatment Provider Register.

Further information about the application process for the rebate scheme can be found on SA Health's website.
