$1 million for APY Lands projects

Just over $1 million has been earmarked by the State Government for a range of projects in the APY Lands.

Ernabella Arts will receive $722,000 for an extension and refurbishment of the arts centre, located in the Pukatja Community in the far north-west of South Australia.

Pukatja was the first permanent settlement on the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands (APY Lands). Ernabella Arts' craft room was established in 1948.

Today, the centre (pictured below), which is Aboriginal owned and run, promotes and supports the ethical practice for the creation and sale of Indigenous art, and is a place of cultural and national significance.

Other projects to receive funding include:

  • $30,000 for two new bus shelters on the Stuart Highway near Indulkana
  • $270,000 for security measures at Pipalyatjara Store
  • $18,000 for five new streetlights in Indulkana
  • $3000 for signage at Kalka Oval.

Meantime, earlier this month, a $3.6 million multi-agency facility opened on the APY Lands to help improve community safety through greater collaboration between key agencies.

The Umuwa Multi-Agency Facility, jointly funded by the Commonwealth and State governments, will accommodate SA Police and other agencies that provide child protection and family violence services in the region.
