Historic Old Murray Bridge reopens

Workers from the Department of Infrastructure and Transport pose at the entrance of the refurbished Old Murray Bridge, recreating the image taken in 1879 (pictured below).

The Old Murray Bridge was first constructed in 1879. Now, major refurbishment works, which are nearly complete, have extended the life of the State Heritage-listed bridge by another 30 years.

The upgrade to maintain the bridge's long-term structural integrity and improve its heritage value has included painting, repointing, corrosion protection, lighting upgrades and improving pedestrian access and safety for all road users.

Interpretive signs to recognise the Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal history of the area have also been installed.

Two-way traffic was reinstated along the bridge on Sunday 24 September, about three months earlier than expected.

The bridge was the first majorImage of the Old Murray Bridge in 1879. bridge spanning the width of the River Murray in South Australia when it was constructed in 1879.

It provides an important route, linking east and west Murray Bridge.

Minor finishing works, mainly underneath the bridge, are expected to be completed in early 2024, weather permitting.
