History on two wheels: Tour Down Under routes revealed

South Australia is gearing up for one of its biggest sporting events, with the race routes for the 2027 Santos Tour Down Under revealed.

From 16 to 24 January 2027, the nine-day festival of cycling will once again open the international UCI WorldTour season, bringing the world's best men's and women's riders to South Australia.

In a historic first, the men's and women's races will be contested on the same course, on the same day and over the same distance, creating a weekend of world-class racing for fans.

The 2027 edition will also be the longest in event's history, with the men's race covering 874 kilometres across six stages and the women's race spanning 397.3 kilometres over three stages.

South Australia's spectacular coastline will take centre stage, with race starts and finishes in Henley Beach, Glenelg, Christies Beach and Victor Harbor, as well as through the Barossa and Adelaide Hills.

The first stage will begin at Henley Beach before riders head to Gumeracha that will feature a brand-new route across the Birkenhead Bridge and along Military Road, followed by three climbs of Checker Hill that's expected to shake up the overall standings from the opening day.

The Barossa will host Stage 2 for a scenic circuit through Angaston, Tanunda, Greenock and Nuriootpa before riders tackle the notoriously challenging 'Corkscrew' climb from Lobethal to Campbelltown on Stage 3.

Glenelg will host the first-ever men's and women's double-header before both pelotons race to Victor Harbor just 90 minutes apart.

Saturday will see a fresh take on the famous Willunga Hill stage, with riders approaching from Christies Beach through Clarendon before tackling two ascents of the iconic climb.

The race concludes with another first, with Norwood hosting the final stage for the first time before heading into the Adelaide Hills and finishing with a lap around Stirling.

Race Director Stuart O'Grady said the new routes would create fresh opportunities for riders and exciting racing for fans.

"We've had to look for different roads and climbs, so it will be a different looking Tour Down Under and I'm excited by that."

The festival of cycling  will officially begin on Saturday 16 January with the opening of the event's festival hub th 'Tour Village' in Victoria Square. Festival programming, team presentations and community events will be announced in the coming months.
