From in-person events, virtual tours, DIY experiments and citizen science, there is plenty happening across SA to celebrate National Science Week, being held from 10-18 August.
3 - 4 August l Adelaide Showgrounds
Experience science hands-on at Science Alive! – Australia’s largest interactive expo with a diverse range of shows, exhibitors and displays for people of all ages to engage in science in a fun and meaningful way.
10 August l Flinders University
Head to Flinders University’s marine biology labs to take part a deep dive into marine biology and oceanography with a range of immersive activities, crafts and talks. Walk through a life-sized kelp forest and coral reef or experience an underwater scavenger hunt.
Museum in a Box – First Nations Science Festival
8 and 10 August l South Australian Museum
The South Australian Museum and Inspiring South Australia will host a special session of the ‘in a box’ program as part of Payirri-apinthirlu naalityangka, the First Nations Science Festival. The event, developed in collaboration with Kaurna Elders and educators from Gowrie SA, invites curious children aged 3-6 to discover science through songs, stories and playful activities.
11 August l Naracoorte Caves
Join the world-renowned singing paleontologist Professor Flint to launch his latest album, Dancing with Diprotodons. Enjoy a free live performance within the Blanche Cave, while also discovering Naracoorte’s prehistoric past.
Commissioner’s Digital Challenge

Students can take part in free, curriculum-aligned online challenges designed to get young people involved in digital skills and critical thinking. Run by the Commissioner for Children and Young People SA, there are three different challenges - Learn to Speak Robot, Space to Dream and Zoom Out.
STEMM in Your Future Workshops
Each Saturday until 24 August l Adelaide City Library
Unleash your inner scientist and join a series of hands-on STEMM workshops for girls and gender-diverse children aged 8 to 12. Get involved with some fun activities exploring light, statistics, coding and more.
1 – 31 August l MOD Museum
Explore the Broken exhibition and discover how the world could be different if we imagined new ways of being. See how trees might talk and what putting nature first looks like.
11 August l Murray Bridge Community Centre
Head to Murray Bridge for an engaging exploration of soil microbiology and its crucial role in ecosystem health. Take part in hands-on activities and learn more about the ‘Soil Your Undies’ citizen science project.
10 August l Robe
Join a guided tour of the seashore for a hands-on education experience for participants of all ages to search, touch and photograph sea creatures under the guidance of an experienced marine ecologist.
11 August l South Australian Whale Centre, Victor Harbor
Enjoy a special workshop for children aged 8-14 years where they can learn how to identify whales and learn more about the whales visiting the waters of Encounter Bay every year to give birth and nurse their young.
