If Kyle Feltus (pictured above) was to attend his legal studies or economics classes in person, he’d have to get up pretty early.
The Streaky Bay Area School student lives 700km – or a seven-and-a-half-hour drive, provided you don’t stop for Maccas – from the Big Smoke of Adelaide.
But thanks to modern technology Kyle is able to study subjects not offered in person at his West Coast school, logging on to the internet to study via Open Access College.
For Kyle it opens up a new world of education and makes his plans of pursuing a surveying degree at Flin
ders University more feasible.
And as South Australia’s more than 13,000 Year 12s prepare for their final exams this week, things will be a little different for students like Kyle.
"For maths and economics, I’ll sit the exam like everyone else, but legal studies will be done completely online," he said.
"So that will be a bit different, but I think I’m prepared for it."
Kyle said that in some ways he preferred the online teaching through Open Access College to the traditional classroom.
"I actually find it almost better in a way," he said.
"Often I’m the only student in the lesson, and you can be more focused because there are no distractions.
"Not that many years ago the school wasn’t with Open Access, so you could only do a fairly basic range of subjects.
"This is 10 times better. There are no real negatives that I can see."
The promising young golfer said he was looking forward to moving to Adelaide next year to begin his degree and lower his already impressive handicap.
"That’s the plan - just enjoy Adelaide, play a bit of golf and do my studies," he said.
The main exam period started on 3 November with mathematical methods and general mathematics and will end with geography and music studies on 14 November.
Language exams started last month as part of a total 69 SACE Stage 2 subjects with an exam.
Stage 2 SACE examined subjects with the largest number of students in 2025 are:
- general mathematics - 4369 students
- biology - 3255
- mathematical methods - 3040
- psychology - 2736.
The SACE Board has a range of resources and advice for Year 12 students undertaking their final exams. From help and support (external site) to study tips (external site) to advice on actually completing your exam (external site), they are valuable resources for both students and their parents and caregivers.
Students will receive their SACE results on 15 December 2025.
