Part of the State Library has been transformed into a lively and interactive space where young readers aged 0-11 can explore books, stories and play-based learning.
Supported by a $2 million investment from the State Government Arts Investment Fund, the free Little Library has been designed with children at its heart, to help them discover the joy of reading.
It represents a commitment to literacy as the foundation of learning and curiosity and is grounded in the science of Raising Literacy Australia's Words Grow Minds campaign.
Little Library, created in partnership with the City of Adelaide, offers a curated collection of books to borrow and an evolving program of activities and events.
Little Library has been developed in collaboration with Kaurna Warra Pintyanthi and the Centre for Aboriginal Studies in Music at Adelaide University, incorporating elements of the Kaurna Songbook to give children and families opportunities to engage with Kaurna language, culture and storytelling.
The space, designed by global experience design agency Art Processors and brought to life by South Australian construction company Chappell Builder, features artworks from Adelaide-based creatives Carlo Jensen, Andrew Joyner and Lawson Dodd.
State Library of South Australia Director Megan Berghuis said the space aimed to bring children and families together through stories and reading.
"We're thrilled to open Little Library and invite children, families and carers to explore the space and connect through stories, share a love of reading or discover the joy of books for the first time," she said.
"With books and storytelling at the heart of the experience, Little Library has been thoughtfully designed to support the diverse literacy levels of South Australian children and share the local stories that celebrate the places, people and perspectives of South Australia."
