Meet the passionate people in charge of our preschools

They're the educational institutions laying the groundwork for a lifetime of education.

From the Far West Coast to the South-East, our preschools shape and encourage young South Australians, preparing them for the schooling that lies ahead.

At the helm of each preschool is a director, one of a diverse bunch of educators united by one thing - a passion for making sure that their young charges get the best possible start on their educational journeys.

One of our newest directors is Kate McMahon, who's taken the reins at Thorndon Park Kindergarten in Adelaide's north-east.

"It's a new challenge for me as I'm stepping in to leadership for the first time," Ms McMahon said.

"There are a lot of new paths that I haven't tackled yet in my career, so it's really nice that people are trusting me to take on this duty.

"Working with such a passionate team, that have been so welcoming, and becoming part of a strong community has been fantastic."

Ms McMahon, who graduated university with a Bachelor of Early Childhood Education degree, has taught in both regional and metro areas, including Port Augusta and Blair Athol, as well as in the private school sector.

However she says there is one thing that links all young children, no matter where they live - curiosity.

"Children of this age are such curious and creative learners, and they're so excited to be coming  to preschool or school," Ms McMahon said.

"It's wonderful to find out what their interests are and being able to plan accordingly – they're quite driven and they make learning so much fun."

And she said she felt privileged to be appointed director at Thorndon Park in the year it celebrates half a century of teaching the children in its community.

"It's amazing to think that the first generation of children who came through here would be 55 now," Ms McMahon said.

"And it's nice to imagine what future generations of children will be doing in 50 years time."

Here are some of the state's new preschool directors in 2025.

Thorndon Park Kindergarten

Name: Kate McMahon

Age: 37

Previous experience: Over the past 10 years, I’ve had the privilege of working in early years education, both in preschools and schools. I’ve taught in a variety of educational settings, including both public and private schools across Adelaide and rural areas.

Lothornoking forward to: I’m really looking forward to working with my new team. I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of such a passionate, hardworking, and happy group of people. The energy and enthusiasm they bring to the work we do is infectious. This year Thorndon Park Kindergarten is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Being part of such a significant milestone is truly special, and there will be lots of celebrations to mark this achievement.

Biggest challenge for 2025: Finding and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. With my high expectations and passionate drive, I sometimes push myself too hard, so I’ll need to make a conscious effort to keep things in perspective and not let work consume me entirely.

Likes: I feel so fortunate to work with children. Watching them grow as learners is incredibly fulfilling. I’m a big fan of (TV series) Ted Lasso and live by the saying "BELIEVE”. I love beginning my mornings with a good cup of coffee. It’s the perfect way to kickstart my day and set a positive tone. I adore my darling labradoodle, Hazel – she’s my loyal companion. In my spare time, oil painting is a priority.

Dislikes/Pet hate: A pet hate of mine is negativity. I believe it is really important to look for the best in people and situations. It's not hard to be kind or to see the good in others. In fact, I think it’s essential. Every person brings unique strengths that contribute to making a better world.
