Start a new chapter at your local library

From wine tasting to music performances, there's more than meets the eye at your local library.

LibrariesSA is holding a festival to encourage South Australians to discover what's behind the doors at their local library.

Firstival will be held throughout July, with a raft of events held at the state's network of more than 130 public libraries to inspire people to head along to their local library and try a new experience.

There will be more than 350 activities on offer including brewing your first craft beer, extracting your first DNA sample, or making a Book Week costume.

Hanlie Erasmus, Associate Director Public Library Services at LibrariesSA. says the month-long festival is about helping people discover – or rediscover – what their local library offers beyond books.

“Libraries are more than places to borrow books, they’re our communities’ living rooms,” Ms Erasmus said.

“They are places to come together and connect, to play and be creative, to enrich ourselves in lifelong learning.

“LibrariesSA created Firstival as an open invitation to all South Australians to discover what is waiting inside your local library.”

Avid library user Lara Motta is excited to attend Firstival events with her family at their local library.

“We love our local library and I am really looking forward to taking my children along to the virtual reality event as part of Firstival," Ms Motta said.

"Virtual reality is something we have never tried before, and the kids are really excited."

She said her family were regular visitors to the library to borrow books and toys, as well as the thousands of digital resources on offer.

“The library has played a big part in our life and provided a fantastic support and foundation for our young children’s development," Ms Motta said.

The jam-packed Firstival program runs from Saturday 1 July 2023 until Monday 31 July 2023, with more than 350 free and low-cost events for all ages at libraries across the state.
