Plans have been unveiled to transform the North Adelaide Public Golf Course into a leading golfing destination and improved public space in the Adelaide Park Lands.
The $45 million upgrade will recognise the cultural significance of Adelaide’s beloved Park Lands, expand walking and riding trails and open the park for greater access.
Once finished, it will be one of the world’s greatest public golf courses, comprising an 18 Hole Championship Golf Course, driving range and practice areas.
From 2028, the course will host LIV Golf Adelaide and the women’s Australian Open. Since its introduction in 2023, LIV Golf Adelaide has contributed $217 million to the state’s economy, with more than $80 million last year alone.
Work on the redevelopment, by Greg Norman Golf Course Design, is due to begin mid next year. The design includes the following defining principles:
- minimising impacts to existing significant trees
- no permanent fencing
- the golf course remains a public course for the enjoyment of all South Australians.
Design work has also commenced on a modern clubroom facility that is appropriate for the parkland setting.
The Government has worked closely with specialist consultants throughout the process to minimise the impact on the natural environment.
There are currently an estimated 9000 trees in this part of the Adelaide Park Lands. Of these, 585 are expected to be removed.
For every tree removed during the project, at least three new trees or seedlings will be planted.
The course and its surrounds – including Karrawirra Pari (River Torrens) directly adjacent to the site – hold strong cultural and spiritual importance to the Kaurna people.
To ensure respectful management of heritage and culture and to incorporate Kaurna values, stories, art, language and history, Kaurna Yerta Aboriginal Corporation, Kaurna Elders and Traditional Owners are being engaged throughout the project and its delivery.
Members of the public can view the new championship golf course design at the South Australia stand at the Christmas Test Festival by the East Gate of the Adelaide Oval, from 18 to 20 December 2025.
