SA students craft a win at national esports championships

The Sigma Serpents - Hamish Panchal, Alexander Renfrey, Aarush Ranjeet and Hugo Hooft - with their national esports trophy.

It’s the best-selling video game of all time, a digital phenomenon with 140 million active players a month that’s spawned everything from soft toys to a hit movie starring Jack Black.

And now Minecraft is helping South Australian students learn.

The Sigma Serpents, an esports team from Lockleys North Primary School, have been crowned the overall winners of the 2025 Australian Esports League Minecraft Competition – Series 1 for students in Years 4 to 6.

As part of the challenge, students used Minecraft: Education Edition to explore and interpret a First Nations Dreaming story, with the Lockleys North team creating a detailed retelling of the Rainbow Serpent story, showcasing key characters, transformations, and the story’s cultural significance.

Lockley’s North Primary Principal Tyson Grinham said the school was "incredibly proud" of the students.

Mr Grinham said it was the first time the school had participated in the national esports competition, with five teams from Lockleys North entering.

He said that through their work the Sigma Serpents, all Year 6 students, were able "to build teamwork and problem-solving skills, engage with Aboriginal culture and storytelling and demonstrate digital creativity and cultural respect".

Feedback from the Australian Esports League said that the students’ work was a “creative and well-thought-out build (that) stood out for its strong cultural storytelling and artistic presentation".

"The accompanying video clearly conveyed the students’ intentions and respect for the Dreaming story they selected," the league said.

Next the Sigma Serpents will represent their school at the upcoming State Minecraft Capture the Flag before competing in the Australian Esports League Schools Minecraft Competition Series 2 later this term.
