Showing off all that's great about our state

"Pasties!" the lady exclaimed as she approached the We Are.SA stand at this year’s Royal Adelaide Show.

“If you want to know what South Australia does better than any other state then the answer is pasties," she said, writing heboard1r answer on the display board.

"I’m from Victoria and I’ll tell you that nobody in that state knows anything about pasties – they put corn in them!"

Brought to SA by Cornish immigrant copper miners, the delicious flaky treats were certainly not the only thing that had you singing our state’s praises.

We posed three questions: What does SA do better than any other state? Who is your South Australian hero? and What is SA’s best produce?

It was the produce question that had showgoers really licking their lips and waxing lyrical about the wonderful food and drink produced in South Australia.

Wine, unsurprisingly, was a very popular answer, reflecting the fact that we are the Australian home of vino, producing around half of the nation’s total output.

Fruchoproducecs and iced coffee – both Fleurieu Milk Company and Farmers Union – were popular with the sweet tooths, while our wonderful seafood smallgoods also got the tick of approval.

And there was even a shoutout to the kitchener bun, the uniquely South Australian treat that was renamed from berliner in 1915 to remove any connection to Germany. More than a century later and the fried treats filled with jam and cream are as popular as ever.

There are no prizes for guessing that "festivals" was a popular answer to the question concerning what we do better than other states.

The Fringe, Gather Round, WOMADelaide and the bp Grand Final were all mentioned, proving that our city punches well above its weight when it comes to a good time.

Monarto Zoo, the Central Markets and Adelaide Oval all got a guernsey, and several contributors mentioned our willingness to volunteer. It’s great to know that we’re willing to lend each other a helping hand.

Tex Walker and Travis Boak – legends for the Adelaide Crows and Port Adelaide Power respectively – were both populaboard2r answers on the 'Who is your South Australian hero' board.

And while the footy players kicked some goals, there were also more leftfield answers.

Howard Florey, who shared a Nobel Prize for his role in the development of penicillin, received a mention, as did Ebeneezer Ward – the man who "accidently" gave South Australian women the right to stand for parliament.

And in a heartwarming move that seemed particularly appropriate given that Father’s Day falls during Show time, many youngsters put their dads and mums on the board as their personal South Australian heroes.

Thanks to all who popped in to say hello and share why they love living here in South Australia.
