Were you one of the 135,586 people who attended at least one match at the inaugural Gather Round in 2023?
In good news announced today, you can now start planning for the 2024 Gather Round, which will take place from Thursday 4 April to Sunday 7 April, in round four of the AFL season.
Adelaide Oval will again be the centrepiece, with the regional venues, ticketing and fixture information to be unveiled later in the year.
The date reveal follows news that the inaugural event, held over four days in 2023, contributed more than $83 million to the South Australian economy and generated more than 150,000 visitor nights in the state.
Acting AFL CEO Andrew Dillon said Adelaide felt like "a grand final week, multiplied by 18" during the inaugural event.
"Gather Round 2023 created a small slice of football history – all 18 clubs in the one state at the one time for a full round of nine matches and a celebration of footy," Mr Dillon said.
"South Australia really turned it on. All the activity across the state, the nine matches, the footy festival and the community football engagement were some of the best days and events the AFL has ever delivered.
"The opportunity ahead is to build on this, and by locking it in to South Australia and today announcing the dates for 2024, we are giving everyone a longer runway to put together a bigger and even better event, and our fans certainty around booking travel and accommodation."
The economic benefits of the 2023 Gather Round flowed to the regions, with more than 25,000 of the visitor nights spent outside of Adelaide.
Economic analysis following the event found the match between Brisbane and North Melbourne in Mount Barker helped inject $2 million into the Adelaide Hills economy alone.
The analysis also found that 135,586 individuals attended at least one Gather Round match, with the average person attending two matches across the weekend of footy, with all nine matches sold out.
Nearly two thirds of all interstate visitors came from Victoria, with a combined quarter of interstate visitors from NSW, WA and Queensland.
Round four was chosen for Gather Round 2024 because it enables greater fixture flexibility and the chance to maximise interstate travel, with the dates falling in the middle weekend of school holidays for Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia.
Announcing the dates early will allow fans to start to book travel and accommodation well ahead of the event.
