Energy bill relief on way for vulnerable households

Concessions will be automatically applied to eligible households.

Cost-of-living relief is on its way for about half of all South Australian households, with the South Australian and Federal governments each committing $127.2 million to the Energy Bill Relief Fund.

The rebate, which will help some of the state's most vulnerable households with rising electricity prices next financial year, will be paid on top of the existing State Government energy concession, which is worth up to $263.15 per household in 2023-24.

All households which currently receive the energy concession will automatically qualify for the rebate, which will be applied directly by retailers and spread evenly across the quarterly electricity bills.

Households which receive Family Tax Benefit or Carer Allowance are also eligible for the $500 relief. Eligible recipients will be contacted by either Department of Veterans Affair in July 2023 or Services Australia in September 2023 directly and invited to apply for the rebate.

Around 82,000 small businesses are also in line for a $650 energy rebate in 2023-24, providing they have an annual electricity consumption threshold of 160MWh.

Uniting Communities Chief Executive Simon Schrapel AM said the bill relief would help reduce cost-of-living stress for eligible South Australian households.

"The Government rebate will help to reduce some of the stress being felt by many lower income households who are experiencing some of the largest increases in home energy costs they have ever experienced," Mr Schrapel said.

"Energy costs are one of the most significant contributors to the cost-of-living impacts being felt by so many South Australians and assistance to meeting some of these excessive price hikes is very welcome."
