Record number of paramedic interns hit the road

Nearly 50 paramedic interns - part of SA Ambulance Service's Paramedic Internship Program - are now on the road, after completing their induction and clinical education.

The interns will spend the next year under supervised practice as part of the program, designed to support recent university graduates as they transition to working as a paramedic.

Five of the interns will be based in regional areas and 43 will be stationed at metropolitan stations, as they join the state's dedicated team of paramedic professionals.

SA Ambulance Service Chief Executive Officer Rob Elliott said the program helped boost the state’s ambulance workforce.

“We’re excited to have our largest ever single group of paramedic interns on board to help us to continue to provide the best possible emergency care to our South Australian communities,” Mr Elliott said.

“This is part of a significant resourcing boost that will increase the number of paramedics available to respond to our patients.”

Meantime, an additional 22 ambulance officers were deployed to stations earlier this month - a 16 paramedic crew to Woodville and six officers to the Regional Medical Transfer Service crew at Gawler.

The Woodville officers will be housed at the new $7.8 million Woodville Gardens station, with construction expected to be completed late next year. While it is being built, the officers will be based at Port Adelaide.

The SA Ambulance Service is currently recruiting for experienced paramedics, intensive care paramedics and Emergency Medical Dispatch Support Officers. Hear from current officers Alex and Kate about what a career with the SA Ambulance Service looks like.
