SA’s Windmill Theatre takes Bluey to the world stage

Windmill Theatre Company is bringing Australia’s favourite family to life on the world stage, with Bluey’s Big Play live production playing in the US this month, before heading to the UK.

It will make its London premiere at Royal Festival Hall on the banks of the River Thames in December before heading on an epic 30-venue tour across the United Kingdom and Ireland throughout 2024.

Australian audiences were recently treated to a successful national tour, as the blue heelers characters came to life under the direction of Windmill’s Artistic Director Rosemary Myers and Resident Designer Jonathon Oxlade.

Featuring an original story written by Bluey creator Joe Brumm, the production is presented by BBC Studios and Andrew Kay in association with QPAC’s Out of the Box and Windmill Theatre Company.

In further news for Windmill Theatre, its popular children’s television show Beep and Mort aired its second series on ABC Kids this week.

Beep and Mort is the first studio program for children made in the state in more than a decade.

Shot at the South Australian Film Corporation’s Adelaide Studios, Beep and Mort’s second season employed 168 cast, crew, and creatives throughout its development and production – and was funded by the State Government’s $5.2 million ABC-SAFC Content Pipeline Fund.

Executive Director of Windmill Pictures, Kaye Weeks, said it’s been a busy week for the Adelaide-based company.

"Our Artistic Director, Rosemary Myers, is currently in the United Kingdom directing rehearsals for Bluey’s Big Play, while back home we are madly preparing for the launch of our second series of Beep and Mort on ABC Kids,” Ms Weeks said.

“So that’s a TV show adapted to a play and a play adapted to a TV show – on opposite sides of the globe, all at once!

"It’s a thrill to imagine so many kids experiencing original Australian work by our incredibly talented artists on stage as well as in their own loungerooms.”

Bluey is a global smash hit, produced by the Emmy award-winning Ludo Studio for ABC Kids. The heeler family of Bluey, Bingo, Bandit and Chilli has raced to success, making it the most-watched series ever in Australia and viewed in more than 60 countries.
