Matildas headed to Adelaide Oval for first time

In a significant coup for South Australia, Football Australia, together with the State Government, has announced that the CommBank Matildas will play at Adelaide Oval on Friday 31 May.

The team, which won the hearts of Australians during its history-making run at last year's FIFA Women's World Cup, will play in an international friendly against China.

Following the side's success at the World Cup, the team has been selling out stadiums around Australia, and it is expected the Adelaide match will be no different.

The CommBank Matildas last played in South Australia during an international friendly against Chile in November 2019, attracting a then record attendance of 10,324 at Hindmarsh Stadium.

The match against China is set to provide a major boost to the South Australian economy by attracting visitors to the city in what is a traditionally quieter period for tourism.

China last played in Adelaide as part of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup, taking on England in front of a sold-out Hindmarsh Stadium.

A total of 53.9 million viewers in China watched the match, making it the highest reach for a single match anywhere in the world during the tournament.

Football Australia Chief Executive Officer James Johnson was delighted to be bringing the CommBank Matildas to South Australia for the first time in five years, for one of the team's final matches in Australia prior to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

"As we have seen over the past 12 months, the CommBank Matildas are a box office entertainment juggernaut with an incredible streak of 12 sold out home matches with over 600,000 fans in attendance and millions watching the broadcast of these encounters," Mr Johnson said.

"Our senior national teams are Australia's teams, and it is important we play matches in as many capital cities as possible, and we are thrilled to be returning to Adelaide."

Tickets will go on sale to Football Australia Football Account holders on Friday 8 March at 2pm, and to the general public at noon on Tuesday 12 March. They will start at $20 for juniors, $25 concessions, $35 adults, and $90 for a family ticket and will be available from Ticketek.
