Read all about it: new name for highest literary honour

The biennial awards, administered by The State Library of South Australia, will now be known as the South Australian Literary Awards, instead of its previous name of Adelaide Festival Awards for Literature.

The awards celebrate Australia’s diverse writing culture and are the state’s highest literary honours, with previous winners including June Winch, Jessica Townsend, Dorothy Porter and Richard Flanagan.SA literary awards image

Submissions are now open for next year's awards with winning authors to be announced in the library’s Mortlock Chamber in November 2024.

State Library director Geoff Strempel said the changes, which included a new logo (right), heralded a new era for the awards.

“The new-look awards shine a light on the best writing talent both here in South Australia and nationally, while also supporting the literary community,” Mr Strempel said.

“As the custodian of stories, we’re calling on South Australian authors and writers to share their stories for their chance to vie for the state’s highest literary honour.”

Jointly funded by the State Government and the Libraries Board of SA, the South Australian Literary Awards offer a total prize pool of $167,500 across five South Australian and six national categories, including the $25,000 Premier’s Award given to the overall winner.

Applications for the 2024 awards are open until Friday 15 December 2023.
