New home of basketball in Adelaide

The centre, located at the Adelaide Showground, now has seven courts - up from three - including an International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Level 1 rated show court.

It will be the home of programs for Basketball SA, SA Country Basketball, SA Wheelchair Basketball and SA Church Basketball, as well as the training base for Adelaide Lightning - Adelaide's team in the Women's National Basketball League.

Local, district, state and national league teams will all train at the new complex, which also has a sensory room for people affected by noises, smells, lights and crowds.

The State Government contributed $15.8 million to the development, and Basketball SA and the Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society of SA gave more than $1.135 million and $294,400 respectively.

Basketball South Australia Commission Chairperson Wade Burns said the project was much more than just infrastructure.

“The State Basketball Centre is an investment in community and wellbeing, belonging and social connection," Mr Burns said.

“The creation of a safe space where kids will make life-long friendships, families create precious memories and basketball participants of all ages develop life-skills including teamwork, resilience and leadership.

"Whilst at the same time delivering a FIBA1 compliant stadium that enables basketball to be showcased at a professional and international level."

The State Basketball Centre will also benefit the wider community through its collaboration with the Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society of SA, which recently used the facility during the Royal Adelaide Show and will continue to do so each year.

Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society of SA Chief Executive William Rayner was "proud" to have the new State Basketball Centre at the Adelaide Showground.

"We can provide a safe, clean and comfortable space in the dedicated sensory room and changing places facility for our visitors, ensuring everyone can have a great day at the Show,” Mr Rayner said.

"The infrastructure not only provides esteemed basketball facilities but also operates as one of the best dog judging facilities in Australia."
