If you live south of the city and you catch the tram to work, then you’ll need a backup plan from next week onwards as work to eliminate level crossings begins.
Major works scheduled as part of the Tram Grade Separation Projects will result in the network being closed between South Terrace, Adelaide and Moseley Square, Glenelg from Monday 4 August until late January 2026.
There will also be a full closure of the whole tram network this weekend (August 2 and 3).
Level crossings at Morphett Rd, Morphettville, and Cross and Marion roads in Plympton will be removed, making journeys safer and more reliable.
Work will also be carried out to rebuild the South Road Tram Overpass to accommodate the River Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Project’s lowered motorway.
What’s the alternative?
Buses will replace trams during the six-month partial closure, connecting with trams arriving and departing at the South Terrace tram stop.
Substitute bus services will match the tram frequency and capacity, operating every 10 to 20 minutes during the day and night, and increasing to every five minutes during weekday peak periods.
The replacement bus will service substitute bus stops as close to the tram stops as possible.
There may be longer travel times with modified routes and more congested traffic conditions, so passengers are encouraged to plan ahead.
What if I live on the other side of the city?
Tram services will continue to operate as normal between South Terrace and Royal Adelaide Hospital and between Adelaide Botanic Garden and the Entertainment Centre.
