Net gain: Mile End sporting complex opens

The first stage of the Mile End Sports Complex redevelopment has transformed all 26 outdoor courts into modern- fit-for-purpose facilties, designed to support thousands of players, coaches, officials and spectators who use the precinct each week.

The $12 million Stage 1, jointly funded by the State and Federal governments, includes new playing surfaces, improved lighting, new player shelters, additional outdoor seating, a first aid facility and extra water fountains.

The Adelaide Metropolitan Netball Division senior competitions have returned to the precinct, which supports participation at every level, from juniors and social competitions through to senior divisions.

Netball remains one of the state's most popular sports, with more than 35,000 regular participants across the state.Court facilities

Netball SA CEO Bronwyn Klei said the return of players to Mile End was a significant moment for the netball community.

"Hundreds of netballers, coaches and officials will utilise the upgraded courts as Adelaide Metropolitan Netball Division kicks off its winter season," she said.

The redevelopment is part of the State Government’s broader focus on encouraging children and young people to get active, with almost 19,000 Sports Vouchers claimed for netball in the past year alone.

Work is already underway on Stage 2 of the $92 million redevelopment, with the former stadium demolished to make way for a new indoor multi-sport facility that will cater for netball, volleyball, pickleball and other sports.

Volleyball SA CEO Karla Della Pietra said the new complex would transform how volleyball was delivered at every level.

"For the first time, our sport will have a true home," she said.

"A world-class venue that reflects the scale, professionalism and potential of volleyball as a global Olympic sport."

Once complete in 2028, the complex will feature more indoor courts, a 3000-seat show court, upgraded technology, improved spectator seating and modern change rooms, creating a world-class venue for community sport and major events alike.

The new precinct is expected to welcome more than half a million visitors each year, cementing Mile End as a key hub for sport and recreation in South Australia.
